NO KISSING

Late one afternoon, in the lobby of the Hieizan Kokusai Kanko Hotel on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto, I ran into Bob Cummings. He was in Japan making a film entitled, "My Geisha" along with Shirley MacLaine and Yves Montand.

He'd just come from Tokyo where he had a funny but frustrating experience.

It seemed the Japanese censors were taking a critical view of a sitcom of his being shown on television. Objection was made to the kissing. This must be edited out, even though it was innocent and family styled.

That night, in his hotel room, he turned on the TV. A charming young lady was singing, "There's a small hotel by a wishing well."

She was cute, did justice to the song and was absolutely naked. This was okay, but no kissing.
