In one of my meetings with Tetsutaro lida at Takashimaya, he told me he was part of a group planning to build a golf course in Hawaii. Both golf and the Hawaiian Islands were favorites of wealthier Japanese.

He asked if I would like to become a member and did I have any American friends who might be interested. My response was not encouraging, but I did ask where the course would be built.

"On Oahu," he answered, "just above Pearl Harbor."
